On Thursday morning, Eleanor got to work clearing the backlog of e-mails accumulated from her taking Wednesday off to spend it with Maiah. She couldn’t complain too loudly after she realized Dan had taken on the brunt of them and copied her in on his replies. When lunchtime suddenly sprung upon her, she stretched out her creaky neck and was about to close her eyes to daydream for a few seconds when her cell phone rang. “Eleanor Simpson.”
“Hey!”
“Maiah?”
“Yeah. I wanted to try the phone.”
Eleanor giggled. Maiah sounded so adorable. “Well, ya got me. How’s your day going?”
“Good so far. I moved the piano out into the library, like we talked about.”
“I was gonna help you with that. It’s really heavy!” Eleanor said, scratching through her chopped hair. “Wait…how did it fit through the door?”
“It’s a double door. There’s a latch on the back of the other bookcase. How did you think he got it in there in the first place?”
Eleanor laughed and flopped back in her chair. “I hadn’t even thought about that.”
“Well, anyway, I could handle the move by myself. The piano has wheels, and I’ve got some muscles, ya know? Although I have noticed recently I’ve put on a little weight. Maybe I should go running around the apartment or something.”
Eleanor listened with a huge smile on her face. I could get used to her brightening up my day like this. “Honey, you are beautiful just the way you are, but if you want to keep in shape, you could join me at the fitness center in the lobby of our building.”
“Oh yeah. Carl told me you go there sometimes. Can you show me how to work the machines?”
“Absolutely, but remember, you’re also perfect just the way you are.”
Maiah’s blush was almost audible. “Thank you, Ellie. So are you.”
Eleanor inhaled deeply. “Thank you. Now what are you going to get up to after this call?”
“Well, I thought I’d go see what’s in the boxes in the storage room. Would that be OK?”
“Of course. You can look anywhere you like. I have no secrets from you.”
“Ooh! That reminds me. Did you notice what book that little door lever was behind?”
“No.”
A giggle came across the connection before Maiah revealed all. “The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett!”
The CEO threw her head back and laughed. “Perhaps my dad had a good sense of humor.”
“I think he did. And now the terrace can be our secret garden.”
“It really will.” Eleanor’s mind was screaming with happiness at the plans Maiah was making. “OK, I have to go, uh…talk to someone I’ve been neglecting.”
“Who?”
“A lady named Claire who has known me since I was a baby. She’s a bit like a mother to me, and I’ve barely spoken to her in ten years.”
“Oh. Does she live far away?”
“Um, no. She works right here in this firm.”
“Then why…oh, never mind. Just go talk to her. At least you have the chance to speak with someone who loves you, right?”
“You make it sound so simple, honey,” Eleanor said with a sigh.
